FIRST TIME AT OUR CONCERT? DON’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT?

We Are Here To Help Guide You And Make Your Experience More Enjoyable.

Alhambra Orchestra In Concert
What do I wear?
As an audience member you can wear whatever is comfortable for you. A good guide might be your personal dress code for dinner with friends, or “smart casual.” But you will probably see other concert-goers in everything from relatively dressy attire to a T-shirt and jeans, so you can feel comfortable wearing anything in this range.
When should I arrive?
Please try to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the concert. This will allow you to find parking, use the restroom and find a seat.
What if I arrive late?
Sometimes life happens and you arrive late. If you are only a couple minutes late you can quietly enter and try to find a seat as we are likely still introducing the concert and haven’t begun yet. If the concert has begun, please try and wait until a piece has finished and you hear applause. But most importantly be as quiet and respectful as you can not only to the musicians but the other concert goers as well.
What if I have to leave early?
If you need to leave early, please do so between pieces or during intermission.
How long is a typical concert?
Concert program lengths can vary but typical expect it to last about one and one half hours (including intermission).
When should I clap?
Normally you would clap at the end of each piece – this includes pieces with several movements. If you are unsure of whether or not clapping is appropriate, follow the lead of the experienced audience members around you. If you are still unsure when to applaud, watch the conductor. When he has dropped his hands down to his sides, the applause may begin.
Why is there an intermission?
The intermission is a short rest period for the performers. Most intermissions are about 15-20 minutes long. Listening to music is also an intense activity and a break in the middle helps the audience concentrate better in the second half. Audience members use the intermission to visit the restroom, check their phones for messages, and talk to each other. Occasionally, though, there are concerts with no intermission. Check your program to see if there is an intermission and when will it take place.
Can I bring my children?
The Alhambra Orchestra presents several concerts and educational programs designed especially for children. All other concerts in our season are family oriented and children are more than welcome. Our concerts are great opportunities for families to enjoy classical music together.

Keep in mind that many standard-length classical concerts are too long for small children since it requires an attention span that is difficult for youngsters to maintain. If your children are accustomed to sitting quietly for an extended period of time, you may wish to bring them to all of our concerts.

Can I take pictures during the concert?
You may take short clips and photos while the orchestra performs, but only for your own personal use. Otherwise, depending on the venue, cameras and recording equipment, including mobile phones, may not be used during the performance.
Can I bring my cell phone?
Patrons with cell phones, alarm watches and/or electronic paging systems are requested to turn them off prior to entering the concert hall. Please contact the house manager before entering the auditorium if emergency notification might be required.
Coughing and Sneezing.
If you have a cold or allergies, please take appropriate medication in advance to control symptoms. For that tickle in the throat, use a cough drop to ensure that the concert experience is as pleasurable as possible for you — and those around you. But please kindly unwrap them ahead of time as well. Experienced concertgoers try to suppress coughs and sneezes until a loud passage arrives, and muffle these. If you cannot suppress a fit of coughing, it is acceptable to depart from the Hall until you feel better.
Other sounds during the concert.
The most important thing to remember at a classical music concert is to make sure others can listen to the music undisturbed. Please completely silence your cell phones, pagers, watch alarms, and other electronic devices for the duration of the performance.

Don’t talk, whisper, sing or hum along, or move personal belongings. Even the quietest whispers can be heard in the concert hall and can prove to be a distraction to patrons and musicians alike. Conversation at a concert normally stops at the first entrance of the concertmaster, conductor, or soloist. Save your comments until intermission or after the concert, as it will give you and your friends much more to discuss. This will ensure that you and the other patrons will enjoy the full benefit of the performance.

Don’t enter or exit the hall while a performance is in progress unless absolutely necessary. If you must leave your seat, do so quickly and quietly, proceeding to the nearest door or asking the nearest usher for assistance.
