WORLD PREMIERE

Premiering of Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B Minor

This Sunday, July 5, the Alhambra Orchestra invites you to settle in, press play, and experience something truly special from the comfort of your own home.

We are premiering the video of Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B Minor, performed by one of the most extraordinary young cellists in the world today, Thomas Mesa, under the masterful baton of Maestro Daniel Andai.

About the music:
Few concertos in the entire repertoire carry the emotional sweep and sheer beauty of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. Written in 1893 while Dvořák was living and working in New York City, this magnificent work carries the unmistakable spirit of America in every phrase. Much like his beloved New World Symphony, it was born on American soil. In the most meaningful ways, it is as much an American work as it is a Czech one.

About the soloist:
Cuban-American cellist Thomas Mesa has established himself as one of the most charismatic, innovative, and engaging performers of his generation. The recipient of Lincoln Center’s 2025 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Sphinx Organization’s 2023 Medal of Excellence, Thomas has appeared as soloist with major orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, The Cleveland Orchestra, and The Philadelphia Orchestra.

And here is the detail that makes this premiere feel like a full-circle moment: years before those major stages, Thomas Mesa won the Alhambra Orchestra Concerto Competition. He began his journey with us. On Sunday, he comes back.
